Before I start blowing up social media again with pictures of beautiful Lake Malawi, I thought it only fair to elaborate on our ‘next steps.’ Back in August I posted about starting the negotiation process on some very promising land on the Luromo peninsula. Unfortunately, we hit a snafu with that land. One of the five land owners had his own plans to utilize the land, so that puts us right back into the exploration phase. But not to worry, we’ve already been given a few top-secret insider leads on some other beautiful land options nearby (thanks to some lovely Peace Corps volunteers!).
I’ve been back in Malawi now for almost two weeks. I have been busy catching up with friends and putting down some roots. I got my Malawian traffic registration card, bought a pickup truck for the lodge, and paid the first month’s rent on a little house that Zinyengo found for us. We now have a home base! Tomorrow is move-in day and we’ll likely spend a few days getting settled in. After that, it’s back to exploration.
Currently, the only downside I see is the lack of my trusty little sidekick, Oliver. I sure miss his backseat driving and his ability to absorb information like a sponge in my new pursuit of learning to drive a manual! In a video chat earlier today, I told him I was forced to get a manual truck and that I’m learning to drive stick, to which he replied “FINALLY!” But he gave me the stamp of approval on my truck purchase, so all is right with the world again.
So that is the quick and dirty. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for the highlights of exploration, round two!
